Tirana Court orders release of 14 protesters arrested near Prime Ministry
The Court of Tirana has ordered the immediate release of 14 activists and citizens who were arrested following clashes with police near the Prime Ministry on September 1. Judge Oltjona Goxha ruled that the flagrant arrests were illegal and deemed the protest itself to be lawful. The court also rejected prosecution requests for mandatory appearance and restrictions on gathering near police stations.
The detainees had been held in custody for 72 hours. The arrests occurred after protesters surrounded the government building upon learning the Prime Minister was inside. Police had claimed that high-level state personalities were present in the building during the incident.
This legal development comes amid ongoing civil unrest, with activists noting that citizens have been protesting against the government for 98 days. Activists have called for further demonstrations to move in front of the Parliament building as the new parliamentary session begins.
