Pavla Wonky Bridge in Pardubice reopens after €235 million reconstruction

The Pavla Wonky (Wonkův) Bridge over the Labe River in Pardubice has been opened to traffic in a preliminary usage regime after a major reconstruction. The project, financed by the Pardubický region at a cost of about 235 million Czech crowns, was delayed by nine months and involved complex technical work such as replacing free‑pre‑tension cables, installing new inspection chambers, renewing insulation, road layers, sidewalks and drainage, and relocating engineering networks.

Deputy regional governor for transport Ladislav Valtr said the bridge’s reopening “means a return to full traffic for users.” Director of the Regional Roads Administration Zdeněk Vašák noted that only minor finishing works remain, which will not materially affect traffic. The bridge now carries five traffic lanes, including a turning lane, and retains pedestrian and cyclist paths on both sides. It handles tens of thousands of vehicles daily and is designed for high traffic loads for the coming decades.

The reconstruction ranks among the most technically demanding bridge projects undertaken by the Pardubický region in recent years and is expected to provide a long‑term, safe crossing for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
