Pavlos Marinakis addresses Greek national interests and fuel taxes

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis addressed several key national issues during a briefing for political correspondents. Regarding relations with Turkey, Marinakis stated that Greece is strengthening its position and protecting its national interests, rejecting recent Turkish statements which he characterized as ‘unhistorical’. He emphasized that while the government supports dialogue, it does not imply concession or negligence, noting that armed forces are active in the field.

On the issue of energy costs, Marinakis addressed the potential reduction of the Special Consumption Tax (EFC) on fuels. He accused the opposition of ‘ignorance or populism’ regarding the matter, explaining that any tax reduction must occur within the European Union's fiscal framework. He noted that the government is exploring the possibility of an exemption from relevant EU escape clauses to ensure fiscal responsibility while seeking benefits for citizens.

Additionally, Marinakis commented on railway safety, referring to new security filters implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport following the Tempi tragedy. He expressed concern over continued public distrust in the rail system despite reported progress in safety measures.
