Pavlos Marinakis announces crackdown on tax evasion and organized crime

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has declared that the era of operating above the law is ending, emphasizing the government's commitment to combating tax evasion and organized economic crime. During a briefing for political editors, Marinakis highlighted the work of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

According to official data, the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime has handled 1,510 cases, resulting in charges against nearly 5,500 individuals and the dismantling of 259 criminal organizations. These include networks involved in illegal software at fuel stations, cigarette smuggling, and organizations infiltrating public offices.

Regarding tax enforcement, the AADE conducted over 60,000 regular tax audits and more than 100,000 on-site business inspections during 2024 and 2025, securing over 5.2 billion euros in taxes and fines. Marinakis noted that reducing tax evasion is estimated to generate at least 1 billion euros in additional annual revenue.

Additionally, Marinakis addressed discussions regarding the expansion of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delimitation agreement between Greece and Egypt, as well as an agreement concerning the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai.
