Alexis Tsipras targets government in new political offensive

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Greek Left Coalition (ELAS), has launched a political offensive through a series of interviews, positioning himself as an experienced administrator ready for a second term. Tsipras claims that the upcoming second electoral round will be a “round of overthrow,” suggesting his party could become the leading force if voters demand a change in government. He has emphasized his readiness, stating that 80% of his party's candidate lists are prepared, and has pledged transparency regarding ELAS's funding.

Tsipras has criticized the current government on issues of corruption, the cost of living, and the independence of the judiciary. He argued that a progressive government must ensure the judiciary is free from interference and that all citizens are equal before the law. He also addressed his relationship with PASOK, describing them as competitors rather than enemies, while rejecting the idea of pre-arranged electoral alliances.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis responded sharply to Tsipras's claims. Marinakis dismissed Tsipras's narrative of “clashing with interests” as an attempt to rewrite history, questioning his past decisions regarding the 2019 Penal Code and the functioning of the Ministry of Justice. The government also raised questions regarding the sources of funding for Tsipras's new political movement, asserting that the collective memory of his previous administration remains strong.
