Pavlos Marinakis denies 'woke agenda' in Greek school textbooks
Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has addressed controversies regarding new primary school textbooks that reference different forms of family structures. Responding to criticisms that the materials promote a 'woke agenda', Marinakis stated that the government does not follow such an agenda, asserting that 'there are 2 genders, a father is a father, and a mother is a mother.' He noted that there is no legislation or ministerial decision supporting the implementation of a 'woke agenda' within the state.
Marinakis emphasized that greater sensitivity and care are necessary when selecting curricula and textbooks, particularly for children in the first three grades of primary school.
The Ministry of Education clarified that the textbooks were selected following evaluations by the Institute of Educational Policy. These evaluations were conducted by independent scientific committees comprising more than 900 members. The Ministry maintained that it followed institutional frameworks and did not intervene in the content of the books. These materials are part of the 'Multiple Books' system, which is set to be implemented starting from the 2027-2028 school year.
