Pavlos Marinakis sparks controversy over unemployment benefit proposals

Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has sparked significant political controversy following statements suggesting that unemployment benefits should not exceed two months. Marinakis framed the suggestion as a personal opinion rather than an official government policy, a distinction noted by officials like Nikos Keramei.

The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from various sectors. The Greek Labor Confederation (ADEDY) condemned the remarks, arguing that unemployment benefits are a right funded by worker contributions rather than a state gift. The Hellenic Left Symparataxi (EL.AS.) also criticized Marinakis, questioning whether his views would lead to his removal from New Democracy's candidate lists.

In response, Deputy Minister Vasilis Spanakis defended Marinakis, stating that the discussion should shift from the duration of benefits to the necessity of strengthening employment, citing a decrease in unemployment rates. Meanwhile, Marinakis engaged in a political dispute with PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, dismissing Androulakis's economic proposals as unrealistic and lacking clear funding plans.

Critics highlight that a two-month limit would disproportionately affect seasonal workers, particularly in the tourism sector on islands like Cephalonia, where the period of unemployment often extends far beyond sixty days.
