Pavlos Polakis criticizes Greek government over energy costs

Pavlos Polakis, the parliamentary spokesperson for SYRIZA, has launched a sharp critique against the Greek government regarding the cost of living, energy policy, and the management of strategic infrastructure. Polakis argued that the next electoral contest will be defined by issues such as economic stability, energy costs, and the return of critical infrastructure to public control.

Specifically, Polakis proposed that placing the management of ELPE under public control and implementing profit caps on refining margins would combat fuel speculation. He also suggested reducing the Special Consumption Tax to the lowest levels permitted by the European Union to provide relief to Greek families.

Regarding energy, the SYRIZA MP criticized the government’s decision for premature lignite phase-out and the transfer of DEI to private funds and investors, claiming these moves have driven up electricity costs despite increased renewable energy participation. He questioned why critical national infrastructure should be under the control of private or foreign investors.
