Pavlos Polakis signals interest in SYRIZA leadership

Pavlos Polakis, a prominent SYRIZA lawmaker, has signaled his intention to seek the leadership of the SYRIZA party. In a series of recent statements and an interview with ‘Chaniotika Nea’, Polakis expressed that the chapter on party leadership is not closed and stated his ambition to lead the party back to Parliament.

Polakis launched a political platform titled ‘Six Pillars of a Governing Left’, which draws on the theories of Nicos Poulantzas. The program advocates for the reversal of neoliberal reforms, the restructuring of the justice system, state decentralization, a strong social state, a new productive model, and a multidimensional foreign policy.

During his remarks, Polakis launched sharp criticisms against former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, claiming he failed to perform effective opposition between 2019 and 2023, and against Stefanos Kasselakis, whom he labeled a ‘fraud’. He also criticized the current government under Kyriakos Mitsotakis regarding infrastructure and economic policies in Crete.

Beyond national politics, Polakis left open the possibility of running for the Mayor of Chania or the Regional Governor of Crete, noting that the current development model in Chania has reached its limits.
