PawaPay secures PSP license in Mozambique
PawaPay, a pan-African payments aggregator, has secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence from the Bank of Mozambique through its local subsidiary, Quidexplus Mozambique. This authorization makes PawaPay one of the first companies to hold such a license in the country.
The license allows the company to onboard merchants directly and provide regulated payment services within Mozambique, a market that currently features over 12 million active mobile money accounts across operators M-Pesa, E-Mola, and mKesh. Previously, limited licensed infrastructure had constrained the ability of merchants to operate at scale.
PawaPay already operates in 23 African markets, processing approximately 7 million transactions daily for sectors such as retail, ride-hailing, and remittances. The company intends to begin commercial operations and merchant onboarding immediately, while also engaging in discussions with mobile operators and international remittance providers to expand inbound payment flows.
