PayPal and Venmo enable tuition payments at US universities
PayPal has announced the integration of PayPal and Venmo into university payment systems across the United States. The rollout is facilitated through partnerships with three major education payment processors: Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet.
Students and families can use these services through their university’s existing online payment portals to pay tuition and other fees. This method allows for funding via linked bank accounts, credit cards, or existing PayPal and Venmo balances. Participating institutions already include Michigan State University, Bellarmine University, Texas Tech University, Butler University, and Kansas State University.
While the integration offers increased convenience, universities may apply service or convenience fees. For example, Kansas State University plans to charge a minimum $3 fee for transactions over $20. Legal experts, including Carla Sanchez-Adams of the National Consumer Law Center, have advised caution, noting that digital payment apps are loosely regulated and may offer limited recourse for transaction errors compared to traditional banking methods.
