PayPal implements global restructuring and mass layoffs
PayPal is executing a massive global restructuring aimed at reducing its workforce by approximately 20%, or roughly 4,760 jobs, over the next two to three years. The company intends to achieve at least $1.5 billion in annual cost savings, with a significant portion of those savings driven by increased adoption of artificial intelligence.
In India, the scale of job cuts has been a point of contention. While some reports suggest approximately 600 employees were laid off across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, a PayPal spokesperson stated that the reduction on August 31 involved approximately 220 employees, representing about 4% of the local workforce. Impacted roles include technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance.
Other regional impacts include the dismissal of about 70 employees in Israel—roughly 25% of its local workforce—and 164 employees in Ireland. In the United States, the company is cutting 251 positions at its San Jose headquarters, specifically targeting senior software engineers, product directors, and managers.
CEO Enrique Lores is leading this multi-year transformation to simplify global operations and position the company for long-term growth through leaner structures and enhanced automation.
