PayPal faces $53B acquisition bid and China expansion efforts

PayPal is the subject of a significant $53 billion acquisition bid from Stripe and private-equity firm Advent International. The offer, reported at $60.50 per share, aims to create a combined entity capable of processing approximately $3.7 trillion in annual payment volume. A key driver of the deal is the potential to control a complete dollar-token stack, integrating PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin with Stripe’s Bridge issuance rails.

Separately, PayPal is pursuing expansion in China through direct engagement with the People’s Bank of China. Moving beyond its current focus on facilitating cross-border transactions for Chinese merchants, the company is seeking to deepen its domestic presence. Recent strategic moves include the approval of a new CEO for its Chinese subsidiary, Beibao Payment, and a partnership allowing US PayPal users to pay Chinese merchants via WeChat Pay QR codes.
