Stripe and Advent abandon $53 billion PayPal takeover bid
A consortium comprising payments giant Stripe and private equity firm Advent International has abandoned its attempt to acquire PayPal. The proposed deal, which would have been one of the largest leveraged buyouts in history, was valued at over $53 billion based on a July offer of $60.50 per share.
Reports indicate that PayPal’s board opposed the takeover, viewing the offer as insufficient to reflect the company’s potential value. The board also cited concerns regarding financing security and potential regulatory hurdles. The decision to walk away follows a period of stock price volatility; while takeover rumors had previously helped boost PayPal’s shares, the news of the abandoned bid caused the stock to plunge by as much as 16% in premarket trading.
PayPal is currently undergoing a major restructuring under CEO Enrique Lores, who took over in March 2026. The company is focused on modernizing its payment technologies to compete with rivals like Apple and Alphabet while aiming to improve profitability through cost-cutting measures.
