PayPal users targeted by widespread phishing scam

A significant phishing wave is targeting PayPal users, particularly in Germany, using fraudulent emails to steal login credentials and financial data. The scam utilizes high-pressure tactics, such as a 24-hour ultimatum, claiming that accounts must be verified due to new security standards or threatening permanent account deletion if action is not taken immediately.

Consumer protection agencies, including the Verbraucherzentrale, warn that these emails often use impersonal greetings like ‘Dear Customer’ and contain links to professionally forged login pages. To protect themselves, experts recommend that users never click on links within unexpected security emails. Instead, users should access their accounts directly through the official PayPal app or by manually typing the official website address into their browser.

If personal data has already been entered, users are advised to change their passwords immediately via the legitimate provider, monitor account activity for unauthorized transactions, and contact PayPal through official support channels.
