PayPay surpasses 75 million registered users in Japan

PayPay has announced that its registered user base surpassed 75 million as of August 9, 2026. This figure represents more than one in two people in Japan and approximately three out of four smartphone users. The company reported that annual transaction volume reached 8.88 billion in 2025, a 19% increase from the previous year. Based on Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry data, PayPay accounts for over 20% of the 43.5 billion total cashless transactions in Japan.

Beyond standard payments, the platform is expanding into digital financial services. It holds approximately 98% of the market share for peer-to-peer code payment transfers. Additionally, the company utilizes transaction data for credit assessments via PayPay Card and for financing services for merchants.

In conjunction with its growth, PayPay is running a promotional campaign for the food delivery app Rocket Now. Throughout August 2026, first-time users who make a payment of 2,000 yen or more via PayPay on the app can participate in a scratch lottery. Prizes range from 0.5% to 100% of the transaction amount in PayPay points, with a maximum cap of 100,000 points per user.
