BNY explores digital asset partnership with Kraken parent Payward

BNY is in discussions with Payward, the parent company of the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, regarding a broad potential partnership. The proposed cooperation could span several areas, including digital asset products, custody, wealth management, trading, payments, and financial infrastructure.

The discussions may involve Payward Services, the company’s business-to-business platform designed for banks, asset managers, and other financial institutions. The potential arrangement could mirror the infrastructure-focused collaboration Payward recently established with Nasdaq.

In September, Nasdaq Ventures agreed to invest $100 million in Payward at a reported $21 billion valuation to support tokenized equities and market infrastructure. Payward and Nasdaq are currently working toward a launch of Nasdaq Equity Tokens in the second quarter of 2027.

Payward has been expanding its operations beyond spot crypto trading to include derivatives, staking, and stablecoin payments through recent acquisitions such as Bitnomial, Reap, and NinjaTrader. BNY, a major global custodian, has also been increasing its focus on digital assets, including tokenized deposits and onchain settlement services.
