PC manufacturers shift production back to China amid rising AI component costs

Major personal computer manufacturers, including HP, Asus, Acer, and Dell, are reportedly moving portions of their production from Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam back to China. This strategic shift is driven by soaring costs for essential components, particularly memory (DRAM) and solid-state drives (SSD), which are in high demand due to the artificial intelligence boom.

Industry experts note that China offers a mature workforce, competitive pricing, and a complete supply chain ecosystem that helps mitigate rising expenses. As traditional large-scale manufacturers like Foxconn and Quanta pivot their focus toward higher-margin AI data center servers, emerging Chinese contract manufacturers such as Luxshare Precision, Huaqin Technology, and Longcheer Technology are capturing market share by offering lower quotes and easier access to domestic memory chips.

The cost pressures are significant: some reports indicate DRAM prices have seen massive surges, and the share of component costs in a typical laptop is expected to rise sharply. While companies like Acer state they are dynamically adjusting supply chains to maintain resilience, the trend suggests that if component costs do not stabilize, further production relocation to China may occur.
