PCSX2 emulator releases version 2.8.0 with major performance boosts

The developers of the free PlayStation 2 emulator, PCSX2, have released version 2.8.0, introducing significant performance enhancements and stability improvements. The update focuses on resolving frame rate drops and graphical precision issues in demanding titles. Notable improvements were demonstrated in games such as Need for Speed: Carbon, which saw an increase from approximately 80 FPS to 130 FPS on an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT, and Driv3r, which reportedly jumped from 6 FPS to 51 FPS.

Technical improvements include better handling of depth textures, which helps eliminate visual errors in complex scenes. The emulator now supports 99.5% of the PlayStation 2 library. Additionally, the Windows version now includes essential FFmpeg codecs, removing the need for users to download them separately for features like screen capture. Other quality-of-life updates include an improved achievement system and the ability to download game covers directly while in full-screen mode.
