PDI Perjuangan calls for disaster relief and government preparedness
Megawati Soekarnoputri, Chairperson of the PDI Perjuangan, has instructed all party members and officials to cooperate with the government in addressing natural disasters across Indonesia. The directive, communicated via North Sumatra DPD Chair Rapidin Simbolon, calls for rapid response efforts including deploying health volunteers, opening public kitchens, and conducting disaster mitigation.
Simbolon emphasized that the party aims to maintain a “cool” political climate and will not initiate political disturbances during these emergencies. Specific focus was also directed toward supporting the recovery efforts in Central Tapanuli.
Concurrently, PDI Perjuangan lawmaker I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana has urged the government to ensure adequate budget, logistics, and inter-agency coordination to handle the increasing frequency of disasters. He noted that current challenges include the continuous eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau affecting Lampung and Banten, as well as forest fires and other volcanic activities. Kariyasa warned that disaster response must be treated as a vital investment rather than a mere administrative process, questioning if current capacities match the scale of ongoing events.
