Iltija Mufti charged after assaulting police officer at Srinagar Article 370 protest

Srinagar police registered FIR No. 63/2026 against PDP leader Iltija Mufti, daughter of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a protest on August 4, 2026. The demonstration, marking the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, was led by Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti and aimed to march towards Lal Chowk. Police said protesters tried to breach barricades on Residency Road, and Iltija Mufti grabbed the officer and bit his forearm, causing a bleeding injury. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment. The FIR cites sections of the Indian Penal Code for assault and obstruction of public servants, and Iltija Mufti has been summoned to Kothibagh police station for investigation. The PDP has condemned the police action as an abuse of power, alleging that officers used excessive force against peaceful demonstrators.
