Liberal Party divided over Chamber of Deputies presidency race

The Liberal Party (PL) is facing an internal rift regarding its strategy for the 2027 election of the President of the Chamber of Deputies. The party is split between supporting the reelection of Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), who already commands a coalition of 15 parties, and launching its own candidate to maintain political identity.

Pragmatic members of the PL argue that joining Motta’s bloc is essential to secure leadership of influential parliamentary commissions. Technical projections suggest that if the PL remains outside the majority bloc, it could drop to the 16th position in the priority list for commission chairmanships. Conversely, a faction led by federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) advocates for an independent candidacy, citing the need to provide a clear message to voters and maintain opposition to Motta, who supported President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the elections.

Nikolas Ferreira has suggested Luiz Philippe de Orleans e Bragança (PL-SP) and Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ) as potential candidates. The party is expected to meet on November 11 to finalize its position.
