Aragon wildfires threaten San Juan de la Peña and Peña Oroel
Wildfires in the Aragon region of Spain have threatened significant cultural and historical landmarks, including the San Juan de la Peña monastery and the Peña Oroel mountain near Jaca.
The San Juan de la Peña monastery appears to have escaped major damage, as the surrounding rock formation provided protection from the flames. While the surrounding vegetation was burned, the structure remains in good condition. Emergency units (UME) previously conducted complex operations to rescue bone remains in urns and other significant artworks from the site.
Meanwhile, the Peña Oroel mountain remains under threat. Local volunteers have mobilized in areas such as Vinué, Navasa, Barós, and Ulle to create firebreaks using tools and tractors to defend the site, which is a central symbol of the city of Jaca and the historical identity of the region.
