Peace lily care: managing watering and yellowing leaves

Maintaining healthy peace lilies requires adjusting care routines as seasons change and monitoring for signs of distress. During October, decreasing daylight and cooler temperatures mean plants typically require less water than in summer. It is recommended to check the top inch of potting mix and water only when it feels dry to prevent root rot.

Yellowing leaves can indicate natural aging if they occur occasionally on lower foliage. However, widespread yellowing, limp stems, or brown tips often signal overwatering. Soggy soil starves roots of oxygen, leading to root rot. To manage this, owners should remove yellow leaves by cutting them low near the crown with clean scissors and ensure no standing water remains in the plant saucer.
