Germany: Protests planned against compulsory military service
Civil society organizations, youth groups, and artists are organizing large-scale demonstrations in Berlin and Stuttgart on October 2 to protest against the potential reintroduction of compulsory military service in Germany.
The movement, which includes the school strike alliance, aims to signal opposition to increased militarization and armament. Activists have called for a nationwide action day on September 25 to precede the major demonstrations.
Inspired by German student protests, youth organizations from France, Spain, Great Britain, and Italy are now coordinating an international school strike under the motto “We stand together against war.” Discussions regarding the political shifts leading to these movements have highlighted how security policy frameworks established in previous years have shaped current debates over national responsibility and military engagement.
