Peace Runners 773 study links community running to health and economic gains

A new study conducted by Peace Runners 773 on its Out West Run training program has identified significant mental, physical, and economic benefits for participants. The research, led by SPARC for Sports with involvement from Kent State University, highlights how a sense of community belonging drives positive health and social outcomes.

Key findings from the Comprehensive Impact Report include an average improvement of 2.6 points on the PHQ-9 depression scale, moving participants from mild to minimal depressive symptoms. Additionally, participants who met CDC physical activity guidelines generated an estimated $2,040 in annual healthcare savings per person.

The study also noted economic advantages, with increased workplace productivity valued between $3,200 and $3,279 per participant annually. Furthermore, improved physical health contributed to an estimated $1,390 to $1,964 in additional annual earnings per participant. Beyond individual metrics, participants reported a stronger connection to the Garfield Park community.
