Peach cultivation history and production in Greece

Peaches (Prunus persica L. Batsch) originated in Southern China, where they have been cultivated for approximately 7,500 years. Historically, the fruit was brought from Persia to the West by Alexander the Great.

In Greece, peach cultivation dates back to the 4th century BC. Systematic production expanded significantly in the post-war period, particularly in the Macedonia region. Today, Greece is a major global producer and exporter, with the prefectures of Imathia and Pella accounting for 90% of domestic production. The annual flowering in the Veria plain is a notable local attraction.

Peach varieties are categorized by their use, flesh color, and morphology. Key categories include yellow-fleshed peaches, which are popular for fresh consumption; white-fleshed peaches, known for their sweetness and aroma; firm-fleshed varieties used for juices and compotes; and flat peaches, also known as ‘UFO’ peaches.
