Pebble announces major software update with plugin support
Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky has announced a significant update to the PebbleOS SDK, introducing support for plugins. This development marks a major shift from the previous app-based model to a more versatile system.
These plugins are described as “headless apps” written in JavaScript that run in the background on the Pebble smartphone app rather than on the watch itself. This architecture is intended to provide data—such as weather, finance, or traffic—and enable actions like smart home control or music management without impacting the smartwatch's battery life.
For developers, the update allows watchfaces and apps to access ready-made functions without hardcoding specific integrations. For users, this means more dynamic watchfaces that can display real-time information and execute commands, such as viewing calendar events, through a new permission-based system designed to enhance security.
