Peccioli oxy-combustor plant approved by Tuscany regional government
The Tuscany regional government has approved the environmental compatibility of a new oxy-combustor plant in Peccioli, Pisa. Governor Eugenio Giani described the decision as a historic result for the region, stating the facility will transition waste management from landfills to a modern system capable of molecular decomposition and energy production.
The decision has sparked significant political friction. Regional environmental assessor David Barontini, a member of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S), voted in favor of the resolution despite his previous opposition to the project. Barontini characterized his vote as a ‘taking note’ of a completed 1,000-day administrative process rather than a change in his political vision.
Elena Meini of the Lega Toscana criticized the M5S for what she termed a lack of political consistency, calling the vote a ‘political betrayal’ of voters in the Pisa province. The Lega is calling for a more sustainable and economically serious waste management policy to reduce costs for families and businesses.
