Pedemontana Piemontese highway project launches in Piedmont, Italy

On 6 July 2024, ANAS began construction of the first segment of the Pedemontana Piemontese, a new road linking Masserano in the province of Biella to Ghemme in the province of Novara. The work, known as Lot 1, Stralci 1 and 2, covers roughly 15 km of new alignment between the SS‑758 at Masserano and the A‑26 motorway at Ghemme, with an estimated investment of €384.5 million.

The ceremony was attended by Vice‑President of the Council and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, regional infrastructure minister Enrico Bussalino, and ANAS CEO Claudio Andrea Gemme, among others. The contract was awarded to Webuild, to be executed by its subsidiary Cossi Costruzioni. The route will pass through the provinces of Biella, Vercelli and Novara, affecting seven municipalities: Masserano, Brusnengo, Roasio, Lozzolo, Gattinara, Romagnano Sesia and Ghemme. Designed as a primary extra‑urban B‑category road, it will feature two separate carriageways, each with two lanes, for a total width of 22 m.

Officials highlighted the strategic role of the new artery in strengthening the regional industrial network, improving access to international corridors and boosting the competitiveness of northern Italy’s productive system.
