Pedernales residents demand potable water amid tourism expansion

Residents in the communities of Oviedo, Juancho, Nueva Esperanza, and El Cajuil in Pedernales are demanding access to potable water. Locals report that the water shortage crisis has persisted for over 40 years without a definitive solution.

The demand for reliable water services comes as the government proceeds with the construction of the Cabo Rojo International Airport to boost regional tourism. Community members argue that large-scale tourism development should be accompanied by investments that secure basic domestic needs, such as a functional aqueduct.

Juancho Mayor Henry García and civil society representatives have called for responses from the National Institute of Potable Water and Sewerage (INAPA) and the provincial senator. Residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the current insufficient system, which has led to the sale of water that may not meet human consumption standards. The ongoing tension has raised the possibility of protests and strikes.
