Albufeira driver ordered into preventive detention after hit-and-run
An Albufeira court has ordered preventive detention for a 35-year-old man following a major hit-and-run incident in the Oura nightlife area. The incident, which occurred around 03:00 on a Tuesday, left 16 people injured, including two members of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR).
Two victims remain in serious condition, including a 20-year-old woman who suffered multiple fractures to her pelvis, sacrum, and coccyx. The driver, a Portuguese national residing in Sintra who was on vacation in the Algarve, was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 1.29 g/l.
The suspect faces indictment on six counts, including attempted qualified homicide, dangerous driving, resistance, and disobedience. Authorities noted the driver also held driving licenses from Angola and the United Kingdom. The Oura area, where the collision took place, is typically closed to vehicular traffic during nighttime hours.
