Pedestrian crossing buttons improve urban traffic safety

Pedestrian crossing buttons, known as 'botoeiras', are being utilized to improve safety and accessibility at traffic signals. These yellow buttons allow pedestrians to signal the traffic system that they are waiting to cross.

To use the device, a pedestrian must press the button for approximately three seconds. Once the request enters the traffic light cycle, vehicle flow is interrupted at the appropriate time to allow crossing. The equipment includes acoustic signals to indicate safe crossing times and Braille information to assist visually impaired individuals.

Municipal Secretary of Security, Traffic, and Mobility, Iremar Lima, noted that understanding how the equipment works is essential for traffic safety. Mayor Léo Moraes stated that the technology aims to make the city more secure and accessible for all citizens.
