Pedestrian crossing buttons often ineffective, repeated pressing linked to control illusion
Psychologists say many pedestrians repeatedly press crossing‑button devices because the act gives a feeling of control, even when the button does not influence the traffic signal. Experiments show that the reward comes from the action itself, not from any change in outcome.
In major cities only a small fraction of installed buttons actually affect the light cycle. For example, New York City operates about a hundred functional buttons while roughly a thousand remain ineffective. Pressing the button merely registers a request; the controller adds a pedestrian phase to the next suitable cycle after completing the current vehicle phase. Consequently, additional presses do not speed the green light.
The design of pedestrian‑signal systems varies by location and time of day. Some intersections run on fixed cycles that give pedestrians a green phase without any button press, while others rely on the button to log a request. Repeated pressing therefore provides no operational benefit, though it satisfies a psychological need for agency.
