Pedestrian footbridges undergo repairs and replacement discussions

Two separate pedestrian bridge projects are underway or under scrutiny in the United Kingdom and Canada.

In the UK, the Jackfield & Coalport Memorial Footbridge, which spans the River Severn within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, will close for five weeks for essential refurbishment. The project involves replacing the aging timber deck with a durable fibre-reinforced plastic surface featuring a timber-effect finish to maintain its historic appearance. The bridge serves as a First World War memorial and a vital link for local residents and tourists.

In Watford, campaigners and local officials are calling for clarity regarding the replacement of the Oxhey Grange footbridge. The 19th-century structure has been closed since July after a Network Rail inspection deemed it unsafe, with removal work beginning on August 24. The Oxhey Village Environment Group has noted that the closure forces residents to take much longer detours, effectively cutting the community in two. Network Rail is currently finalizing plans for the bridge's removal and developing a methodology for its replacement.
