Pedestrian safety concerns rise as vehicles use sidewalks in Germany and Paraguay

Authorities in Germany and Paraguay are addressing increasing safety concerns regarding vehicles using sidewalks intended for pedestrians.

In Germany, reports from Kastler Straße highlight the danger posed by cyclists and e-scooter users riding on narrow sidewalks. This behavior creates hazards for pedestrians and limits visibility for drivers attempting to exit residential driveways due to physical obstructions like walls.

In Asunción, Paraguay, the traffic police (Caminera) have issued a formal warning to motorcyclists against riding on sidewalks to bypass traffic congestion. Under Article 75 of the Traffic and Road Safety Law (Ley 5016/14), violators face fines equivalent to five days of the minimum wage. Officials note that while enforcement is necessary, the issue is exacerbated by inadequate public transit infrastructure and poor pedestrian accessibility.
