Pediatric cardiology expert warns of hidden heart disease in children
Prof. Dr. Bülent Oran, a pediatric cardiology specialist at Medicana Health Group, has issued warnings regarding the importance of identifying heart conditions in children. He noted that many such conditions are congenital, affecting approximately 1 in 100 live births. Globally, an estimated 1.35 million newborns are born with congenital heart disease each year.
Oran cautioned parents not to dismiss symptoms such as rapid fatigue during play, shortness of breath during exertion, or excessive sweating while feeding as mere 'growing pains' or lack of fitness. Failure to recognize these signs early can negatively impact a child's growth and development.
In addition to congenital issues, acquired heart diseases are also significant. The World Health Organization identifies rheumatic heart disease as the most common acquired heart disease in individuals under the age of 25. Other notable conditions in children include Kawasaki disease, myocarditis, pericarditis, cardiomyopathies, and rhythm disorders.
