Pediatric dental health importance emphasized in cancer care and prevention

Health professionals are emphasizing the critical importance of dental care for children, particularly those undergoing cancer treatments. Dr. Buse Yılmaz Şen from Üsküdar University Dental Hospital noted that chemotherapy and radiotherapy can lead to serious side effects such as oral mucositis, permanent dry mouth, and trismus, which restricts jaw movement. She stressed that dental check-ups should be integrated into cancer treatment plans to manage infections and protect tooth development.

In addition to clinical care, preventive education is being implemented in schools. The Akhisar District Health Directorate has launched awareness programs for primary school students to instill healthy oral hygiene habits from a young age. These programs involve students, teachers, and parents to reduce the long-term need for dental treatments.

Experts also highlight dietary precautions for infants to prevent early childhood caries. Key recommendations include avoiding sugar for children under two years old, being cautious with natural sugars like honey or molasses, and maintaining oral hygiene even while breastfeeding. Proper cleaning habits should begin as soon as the first teeth emerge to prevent decay caused by nighttime feeding or sugary complementary foods.
