Pediatric health experts highlight pain recognition and palliative care needs
Medical experts are highlighting the importance of recognizing non-typical pain in children, which can serve as an early warning sign for serious conditions such as central nervous system tumors. Unlike common daily pain, these symptoms may be more intense in the morning and can be accompanied by vomiting, excessive sleepiness, or changes in balance, vision, and behavior. Because children often struggle to describe their sensations, caregivers must watch for behavioral shifts like irritability, isolation, or regression.
In the context of pediatric palliative care, experts emphasize that these services should be implemented as soon as needs arise, rather than only at the end of life. Palliative care aims to manage complex symptoms and support families through long-term illnesses. However, in Portugal, despite international recognition of its professional expertise, access remains insufficient. A 2025 survey by the Portuguese Association of Palliative Care suggests that national coverage may not exceed 15%, leaving many children without necessary resources.
