Pediatric health experts issue warnings on fever and diarrhea in children

Medical experts in Turkey have issued guidance regarding common pediatric health concerns, specifically focusing on high fever, febrile seizures, and diarrhea in children.

Pediatric specialist Dr. Elif Ruşen Vayvada noted that fever is a natural defense mechanism, but emphasized that a child's general condition is more critical than the temperature itself. She warned that infants under three months with a fever of 38°C or higher, or any child experiencing breathing difficulties or changes in consciousness, require immediate medical attention. Regarding febrile seizures, which typically affect children between six months and five years old, she advised parents to place the child on their side and remove hard objects from the vicinity during an episode.

Additionally, Dr. Baver Demir highlighted the risks of dehydration in children suffering from diarrhea. He warned that the combination of diarrhea and vomiting can lead to rapid fluid loss. Key signs of dehydration include decreased urination, dry mouth and lips, reduced tears, and lethargy. Parents are advised against using antibiotics or anti-diarrheal medications without a doctor's prescription and should seek urgent care if symptoms like blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting occur.
