Pediatric health experts warn of seasonal illnesses and measles risks

Medical experts in Turkey are highlighting common health risks for children during the autumn and winter seasons. Dr. Çiğdem Şenol, a specialist in Child Health and Diseases at Medline Adana Hospital, noted that upper respiratory tract infections are among the most frequent issues. These infections, often viral, typically present with symptoms such as runny nose, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. Dr. Şenol emphasized that antibiotics are generally unnecessary for these viral cases and advised focusing on rest, hydration, and hand hygiene.

Other seasonal concerns include middle ear infections, which can follow colds or flu, and autumn allergies that may exacerbate asthma symptoms. Dr. Şenol also noted the prevalence of sinusitis.

Separately, Dr. Abdullah Sert, Chief Physician at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, warned about the dangers of measles. He stated that measles is a highly contagious viral infection that should not be dismissed as a simple childhood illness. According to Dr. Sert, measles can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, diarrhea, and in rare cases, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), which can cause seizures and neurological issues. He stressed that measles is a vaccine-preventable disease and requires close monitoring, especially in young or immunocompromised children.
