Pediatric health: Managing frequent childhood infections

Pediatric health experts note that frequent infections, such as coughs, colds, and fevers, are common in children as their immune systems continue to develop. In daycare and school settings, children may experience a high frequency of viral infections due to increased exposure to pathogens.

Medical professionals indicate that up to 12 colds per year are considered normal, and for children starting daycare or kindergarten, up to 14 respiratory infections per year can be typical. Most viral infections do not require antibiotics and can be managed with rest and adequate hydration.

Pediatrician Dr. Gabriele Berger emphasizes that a child's general condition is often more critical than any single symptom. Parents are advised to seek medical attention if symptoms include persistent or worsening coughs, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or specific types of rashes.
