Pediatric hospitals in Cuba and Argentina mark medical milestones
Medical institutions in Cuba and Argentina are marking significant milestones in pediatric care. In Pinar del Río, Cuba, the Pepe Portilla Pediatric Hospital is celebrating its centenary. Founded in 1926 as a mutualist clinic for the Spanish community, the facility was later nationalized and has become a provincial reference center. The hospital currently operates 293 beds across 11 hospitalization services, including intensive care, oncology, and a specialized surgical block.
In Misiones, Argentina, the Dr. Fernando Barreyro Pediatric Hospital commemorated ten years of pediatric and neonatal cardiovascular surgeries. Since the program began in 2016, medical teams have operated on more than 380 patients, including extremely premature infants weighing as little as 700 to 800 grams. Surgeon Rafael Niveyro stated that the next goal for the service is to incorporate extracorporeal circulation to treat more complex heart conditions locally.
