Ophthalmologists urge early intervention to combat rising pediatric myopia
Medical experts are highlighting the importance of early intervention to manage the rising prevalence of myopia in children and adolescents. With global myopia rates increasing significantly since 1990, experts warn that untreated pediatric myopia can lead to severe adult complications, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Francesco Bandello, president of Apmo, suggests that combining new defocus lenses with low-concentration atropine eye drops can effectively slow the progression of the condition. Early diagnosis is critical to maximizing the efficacy of these preventive measures.
To protect children's vision, especially during the school year, ophthalmologist Paolo Nucci recommends several lifestyle adjustments:
• Conducting regular eye exams even in the absence of symptoms. • Maintaining a distance of 20-30 cm when using books or digital devices. • Taking breaks every 30-45 minutes to look into the distance. • Balancing screen time with outdoor activities. • Studying in well-lit environments, preferably using natural light. • Spending at least 1-2 hours outdoors daily to promote retinal dopamine release.
