Pediatric nutrition experts discuss gut health and breastfeeding
Experts are providing guidance on infant nutrition and digestive health, emphasizing the importance of gut health for a child's immune system and overall development.
Dr. Hoàng Lê Phúc from Children's Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City noted that approximately 70% of immune cells are concentrated in the gut. To support children with poor digestion, experts recommend nutritional products containing soft, easily absorbable proteins and components that support the gut microbiome, such as HMO, GOS, and probiotics.
Regarding breastfeeding, health organizations including the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. After six months, complementary foods should be introduced, but breastfeeding can and should continue up to two years of age or beyond, as breast milk remains nutritionally valuable even as a child's dietary needs evolve.
