Pediatric respiratory health: Managing autumn allergies and coughs
As autumn approaches, health experts are highlighting common respiratory issues in children, specifically allergic rhinitis and seasonal coughs.
Data from the China CDC indicates that the prevalence of allergic diseases among Chinese children is approximately 37.7%. Key indoor allergens include dust mites, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander. Dust mites are a primary concern, particularly in warm, humid environments. To manage these risks, experts suggest using air purifiers equipped with H13 HEPA filters to reduce allergen concentrations in bedrooms, which can improve sleep quality and reduce morning symptoms.
Regarding seasonal coughs, registered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner Li Yaopei distinguishes between two types: warm-dry coughs, common in early autumn, and cool-dry coughs, common in late autumn. Management strategies include acupressure on the Tiantu and Chize points, as well as dietary remedies such as steamed pear with Fritillaria bulb for dry coughs, or ginger and perilla tea for cold-related coughs. Parents are advised to seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than two weeks or are accompanied by fever or breathing difficulties.
