Pediatric respiratory infections surge during seasonal transitions

Pediatric respiratory infections are surging in emergency departments during seasonal transitions, driven by pathogens such as respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, and seasonal influenza. In Vietnam, approximately 20 percent of preschool children fall ill within the first week of school due to fluctuating weather and crowded classroom environments.

Medical experts, including Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nam of Bach Mai Hospital, warn that conditions like pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and asthma can escalate rapidly. While parents often focus on fever and cough, clinicians emphasize that monitoring breathing patterns and respiratory rates is critical for detecting lower respiratory tract involvement and oxygen deprivation.

Healthcare providers advise against using unprescribed medications or home remedies. Instead, they urge parents to seek immediate hospital evaluation for red-flag symptoms, such as persistent high fever, severe lethargy, or changes in breathing mechanics. Maintaining hygiene and ensuring up-to-date immunization records remain key preventative measures.
