Pediatrician warns of vitamin deficiency risks in children
Pediatric specialist Dr. Miraç Ergen has issued a warning regarding vitamin deficiencies in children during the autumn season. He noted that sudden weather changes and increased time in crowded school environments raise the risk of infection and illness.
Dr. Ergen emphasized that vitamin supplements should only be administered under medical supervision following blood tests. He warned that indiscriminate use of vitamins can cause health issues, particularly affecting the liver. Furthermore, deficiencies can negatively impact growth and academic performance by causing attention and concentration disorders.
To combat these issues, the specialist recommended several strategies:
1. Prioritize dietary diversity, including eggs, meat, fish, dairy, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. 2. Monitor Vitamin D levels, noting that while deficiency is common in Turkey, excessive doses without medical guidance pose risks. 3. Ensure adequate iron intake through red meat and legumes to prevent fatigue and loss of appetite.
