Pediatrician warns on causes of childhood appetite loss
Dr. Mustafa Çiftçi, a pediatric specialist at Medipol Koşuyolu Hospital, warns that childhood appetite loss may stem from various underlying causes rather than simple hunger issues. He notes that many cases reported by parents are actually instances of food selectivity, where children prefer specific foods or reject certain nutrients rather than lacking an appetite entirely.
True loss of appetite can be caused by medical conditions or nutritional deficiencies, specifically involving iron, vitamin D, and zinc. Other factors such as chronic illnesses or poor sleep quality can also manifest as decreased appetite. Dr. Çiftçi advises parents against the indiscriminate use of vitamin supplements, noting that vitamins play critical roles in metabolic processes and should only be administered under medical guidance after proper blood tests and evaluations of height and weight development.
