Pediatricians provide guidance on managing common childhood infections

Medical experts are providing guidance on managing common childhood illnesses and understanding infectious periods for children in preschool and school settings.

Pediatricians note that for children aged three to six, six to ten upper respiratory infections per year are considered normal. For a common cold, a typical recovery should take one to two weeks. Doctors advise that parents should seek medical attention if a runny nose is accompanied by high fever or headaches, or if symptoms persist for more than a month. Recommended treatments include nasal irrigation with saline, maintaining adequate hydration, and using humidified air during heating seasons.

Regarding infectiousness, children with viral upper respiratory infections are most contagious one to two days before symptoms appear and during the first few days of illness. For influenza, the highest risk of transmission occurs during the first three to four days. Children should return to group settings only after being fever-free for at least two days without medication.

Measles is highlighted as highly contagious, with transmission occurring via air one to two days before a rash appears. Children with measles should remain isolated until all blisters have crusted over, which typically takes 10 to 14 days.
